In Moselle Moselle is part of the région of Lorraine and is surrounded by the French departments of Meurthe-et-Moselle and Bas-Rhin, as well as the countries of Germany and Luxembourg. In French, the inhabitants of the département are called Mosellans. The population has remained relatively stable since World War II and now exceeds 1 million, located mostly in the urban area around Metz and along the Moselle River. Metz is the capital both of Moselle and Lorraine and is the cultural
and historic centre of the region. Due to its position, Metz has been
heavily fought over, passing from Germany in 1870 back to France in 1918. |
