Of Lorraine From the depths of the countryside to the center of its towns, Lorraine boasts a very wide-ranging heritage. The influence of various sovereigns has clearly left its mark on the architecture of the region. Metz, for example has a 3,000-year history! St. Stephens Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, pink sandstone and golden yellow stone from Jaumont are used to build the impreesive main railway station, the Germans Gate (Porte des Allemands), the mediaeval Place Saint Louis, Place de la Comédie with its 18th-century theatre, the Knights Templars chapel and the imperial district around the railway station. Bar-le-Duc's, stunning Renaissance Upper Town is like stepping back in time. Epinal has beautiful arcades round Place des Vosges and the Bailiffs House next to the basilica and mediaeval town walls. Nancy, is a beautiful town with it's mesmorising Place Stanislas, it has some exceptional 18th-century buildings designed by Emmanuel Héré as well as some excellent examples of the Art Nouveau style. Leaving the towns and you'll discover Renaissance villages such as Marville and Châtillon-sur-Saône, plus see the villages included in the list of the one hundred most beautiful villages in France (Saint-Quirin, Rodemack). Marsal, with its Porte de France (France Gate) and its Vauban-style walls. Dont forget though Lorraines lesser heritage - its houses, horse troughs, gables and fortified churches should all be visited. For example, Villey-Saint-Etienne high above the Moselle river, further north Scy-Chazelles, from which there are superb views of the Metz area, Hattonchâtel provides superb views of the Meuse, Le Valtin, a traditional village in the heart of the Vosges, or the folk village of Ville-sur-Yron between Metz and Verdun. |
